Dream Team obliterates age-old wrestling record

This is the best ever medal haul achieved at one National Championship.

The Rhino Wrestling Club’s ‘Dream Team’ obliterated a Dundee wrestling record when they bagged 15 medals at the National Wrestling Championships in Pretoria. Fighting as a team, the Rhinos charged down the opposition to take home seven medals in the freestyle category and eight medals in the Greco-Roman wrestling discipline.
Since wrestling started in Dundee 29 years ago, this is the best ever medal haul achieved at one National Championship.
The previous record was six in 2006. The 2016 Dream Team took five gold, nine silver and one bronze medal.
Gold medal winners
Wiehan Whelan: One gold in freestyle and one gold in Greco-Roman.
Beast Shongweni: One gold in freestyle and one gold in Greco-Roman.
Keegan Basson: One gold in Greco-Roman.
Silver medal winners
Willem Husselman: One silver in Greco-Roman.
Nollie Brown: One silver in freestyle and one silver in Greco-Roman.
Kyle Senekal: One silver in Greco-Roman.
JJ du Plessis: One silver in freestyle.
JC Botha: One silver in freestyle.
Theuns van der Merwe: One silver in freestyle.
Dawie Botha: One silver in freestyle.
Theuns van Zyl: One silver in Greco-Roman.
Bronze medal winner
JJ du Plessis: One bronze in Greco-Roman.
