Cricket season off to a good start

Best bowler for Aster was Lloyd Ramdeen taking two wickets in his spell of four overs

The past weekend saw the start of the 2016/17 Cricket Season for the Umtshezi Cricket Association. This season will see eight teams competing in the T20, Pro30 and 50 over leagues, culminating in the T10 cricketing tournament held at the end of the season.

Thursday night, October 6 got the very popular T20 night league underway. The opener had Farhaan Hardware up against Farhaan Aluminium. Farhaan Hardware was sent in to bat first and managed 148 runs after 20 overs.

This was not chased down by Farhaan Aluminium and they were all out, short of the total after some good bowling and fielding by the Farhaan Hardware team. Friday night, October 7 had Aster (defending T20 league title holders) up against the Macksons team.

Macksons won the toss and elected to bowl first. Aster made only 116 in their 20 overs. Contributions with the bat came by Prenay Kewalpersadh with 23 runs. Bringing up his 50 not out with a massive six over the bowler, was Aster’s top batsman Muneer Shaik.

Cricketers played a series of enthusiastic but competitive matches. Members of the Colita and Tintern teams played a match this past Saturday.

Macksons player Ikraam with three wickets held the Aster batsmen at bay. Macksons chased down the score in the 14th over with contributions with the bat from Shuaid Essop with 27 runs and Shezaad Kader making 23 runs.

Best bowler for Aster was Lloyd Ramdeen taking two wickets in his spell of four overs. Saturday afternoon, October 8 had Colita playing Tintern in a Pro30 match. Colita won the toss and elected to bat first, managing 169/8 in their allotted 30 overs that was ended off with a rapid 33 runs off 17 balls by Phillip van Staden.

Tintern players Sahil Bikram and William Blair were top bowlers taking two wickets each for 27 runs. Tintern put up a good fight but could only manage 146/8 after their 30 overs despite a 53 individual score by Stembiso Siwela.

Amith Mangaroo was outstanding with the ball for Colita and recorded excellent figures off his six overs, taking two wickets and only conceding eight runs.  Sunday morning, October 9 had Farhaan Spares up against Wembezi All Stars.

Farhaan Spares elected to bat first and Wembezi did well to restrict this big hitting side to 217 after 30 overs at an impressive run rate of 7.23 per over. This total proved too high a hill to climb for the newly formed Wembezi team as they were all bowled out for 88, courageously trying to chase down the big total set.

Upcoming fixtures will be as follows and all cricket fans are encouraged to come experience the league at Lambert Park cricket grounds:
