Producing the best game of their lives

The rest of the field was left destroyed, dumbstruck, disappointed and completely in awe of their speed, power, accuracy, fitness and ball-striking abilities

The weekend festivities at the club lifted off with a resounding bang on Friday evening, with over 50 members, family and friends enjoying another exceptional supper special – well done to Pier and the staff for ensuring all the orders were executed correctly.

It was the last weekend that the Irish brigade of Jimmy’s family were “spending” out here and did they give it their best shot! By all accounts, they have had a fantastic trip, spending time at Springbok Lodge, visiting Braamhoek among other places, and being shown how a barbecue should be done.

The weather was unfortunately a bit like home to them, but that did not deter this brave band… When it came to the socialising side of their visit, they were up for any challenge thrown at them. It was really great to meet you all and we are sorry to see you leave (our livers not so much), and look forward to seeing all in Ladysmith in the near future.

The eThembeni or CMD / Usizo Golf Day was held on Saturday, with a smaller than usual field taking to the course to raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause. eThembeni is an organisation that caters for all people. Situated at 33 Fairclough Street, it offers (as its core services) counselling to traumatised families, as well as children, also assisting with foster care, adoptions and family therapy.

The centre is ably managed by Mrs Simangele Siwela, a social worker who uses her skills in overseeing various other social workers and volunteers from as far as the Netherlands and the USA to ensure that all their projects are run smoothly and add a much-needed benefit to the uThukela district.

By the time the golf had finished, there were a few who were so traumatised that they needed the services of the eThembeni volunteers by way of counselling and therapy.

There were a few players, particularly Corné Stevens, who did not require any of the above and produced some great golf to win the competition on a masterful 45 points. He was closely followed home by Vernon Naidoo on 44 points, with Neal Singh and Gerry Grobler on 43 and 42 points respectively.

Corné and Neal produced the best game of their lives to leave the rest of the field destroyed, dumbstruck, disappointed and completely in awe of their speed, power, accuracy, fitness and ball-striking abilities.

As one player remarked: “Credit to them; we fought hard to hang in there and went into halfway a few points shy, but unfortunately in the second half they out-classed, out-thought and out-played us.” Another player was heard saying that: “While we certainly were up for the match and the commitment was there, it just was not our day.” He also said that looking to the future, there were a lot of positives that could be taken from the game and that with some exciting players missing out on the day, the future of Ladysmith golf looks promising.

The ‘nearest the pin’ prizes went to Luke Cockroft on the 8th and Patrick Pieterse on the 12th. There were four two-club winners in Gerald Boardman, Corné Stevens, Luke Cockroft and Pam Sanders.

Well done to all the winners over the weekend and I hope the results of your other teams or sport players were better than “that one”. A big thanks to the organisers for producing a wonderful day that was enjoyed by all.

There will be a braai at the club on Friday, so watch your phone and Facebook for details.
