Get out of the rat-race to do the Ratrace

Contributions come in many forms

David Rattray had a belief that by giving people a decent education, they would be better able to fend for themselves and make a substantial contribution to their homes, their villages, their district and the nation as a whole.

They would become a national resource. The David Rattray Foundation has been in operation since 2007, and it provides support to 19 schools in the Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana areas. The “DRF” raises funds and uses them to help the schools with buildings, classrooms, school management training, teacher development, art classes, preschool construction, equipment and training, IT and Science labs, sports equipment, water, electricity and all the essentials that contribute to an improved education.

The annual bicycle Rattrace, now in its 10th year, will be held on July 16 and is an enjoyable fundraising event. “The race distance is 35kms and this includes a single and jeep track. Following on the success of last year’s new and improved route, we will be doing much the same this year, perhaps with a few more technical challenges thrown in! If anyone is interested in running please let us know. If there is sufficient interest we will organise this,” one of the organiers, Simeone, told the Courier.

Contributions come in many forms – the most notable – and one which raises many good-humoured laughs, is the fining process. Fines come in many forms and are all read out after the race while everyone is gathering for lunch. Come along, enjoy a day out in the beautiful countryside, contribute to a very good cause and enjoy the camaraderie of a winters day on bikes. Come and help us make a difference in the lives of the area’s children.
The race starts from 7.30am from: Fugitives’ Drift Guest House, Rorke’s Drift. Details: 034 271 8051 or reservations@fugitivesdrift.com
