Youthful spirit burns in bowlers

A tabs-in club competition held on the Youth Day public holiday, attracted a number of players, all keen to make the most of the break.

NEWCASTLE – A tabs-in club competition held on the Youth Day public holiday, attracted a number of players, all keen to make the most of the break.

Winners of the competition were Simon and Jean Ball, plus Fritz Botha, who recorded a full 10 points.

The Club Singles Championships was started last weekend, with 21 entries received in the men’s section and nine in the women’s section.

Alice Howe, Sue Hutchinson and Eleen Roux won their sections, and then proceeded to play each other in a round robin format to decide the winner.

Alice and Sue both recorded narrow victories against Eleen.

The last game to be played this weekend, now between Sue and Alice, has become the decider.

Men’s section winners were John Douthwaite, Gert Roos, Adrian van der Merwe, Colin Broderick, Billy Nicholas, Ron Howe and Douglas Steele.

In the quarter-finals, John beat Gert, Adrian beat Colin, Ron beat Billy and Douglas had a bye.

The semi-finals then saw John record a victory against Adrian, while Ron accounted for Douglas.

The final, between John and Ron, is scheduled to be played this Saturday.

Members are reminded to keep an eye on the notice board for upcoming competitions, and to take note of the AGM dates and nominations.
