Cutting Edge Ministries, in conjunction with Newcastle Futsal League (NFL), has taken to the sports grounds to help combat social ills.

Last Sunday, the church and NFL hosted a Funfest volleyball and soccer tournament at Paradise Sports Grounds.

Pastor Desmond Gabriel said the purpose of the festival was part of a youth initiative run by Cutting Edge Ministries.

“This is not about religion or Christianity, as all teenagers are faced with the same problems like drugs, peer pressure, broken homes and suicide. With this festival and through similar projects, we want to bring teenagers in with sport, so we can address these issues,” he said.

Pastor Gabriel said funds raised at the tournament would go towards future projects. “We would like to do a youth camp in the future, where we can give teenagers some form of guidance.”

The first of its kind hosted by the NFL and Cutting Edge Ministries, the Funfest proved to be entertaining as sports enthusiasts and spectators enjoyed a day of clean, good sports, escaping the harsh reality many teenagers often faced alone.
