Jaydene spars her way to the top

One thing's for sure- there's power behind Jaydene's punch!

With powerful strikes and a strong stance, Jaydene Naidoo is on the fast track to world domination.

The 12-year-old sensation was first introduced to the art of karate at the age of six; an enigmatic love that blossomed virtually overnight.

Jaydene recently competed in the Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA Championships at the Newcastle Farmers Hall, where she walked away with two gold medals for kata and kumite.

In 2015, the laser-focused youngster took part in the National Championships, where she was selected to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. Here, she obtained her South African colours; a milestone she described as ‘exciting’.

In addition to her jam-packed schedule as a Grade 8 pupil at Newcastle High School, Jaydene trains with Sensei Johan Swart on Mondays and Wednesdays.

“It’s hard work, but I love the sport,” she explained. “I want to become a sensei one day.”

Facing harsh criticism from those who believe karate is for boys, Jaydene revealed she was saddened by the misconceptions. However, she refused to let a mistaken belief dampen her spirit.

She earned her strips as a junior black belt last year, through dedication, determination and the will to succeed.

“People underestimate her strength; the proof is in the pudding,” added her mother, Maggie Naidoo.

Aside from her winning stance, Jaydene plans to play hockey and volleyball in the near future.

As she continues to make strategic strides in the right direction, she said she was humbled by the support of those she holds dear to her heart.

“My friends always want me to teach them how to fight. It’s good to know my friends and family are there for me,” Jaydene concluded.

With no intentions of slowing down anytime soon, she thanked all those who have played instrumental roles in her journey to success to date.
