Burnt End

The Newcastle Men’s and Ladies’ Pairs competition was played last weekend, with excellent bowls witnessed despite the extremely hot conditions.

In the two semi-final matches, Simon Ball and Colin Brodrick pipped Ron Howe and Anil Durgadin by one shot, and Eric Holm and Martin Baasden did likewise to edge out Gert Roos and Tony Reis.

The final was not that close, with Eric and Martin turning on the screws to record a more comfortable victory against Simon and Colin.

The five ladies’ teams played a round robin format with Phyllis Reis and Carline Coetzee playing superb bowls, to end up winners with three victories (6 + 3), with Joan Schoon and Diana Cronje (4 + 6) the runners-up, just ahead of third-placed Marie Botha and Vicky van der Merwe (4 – 5).

A full house of 36 teams is expected for the popular Kings Day, to be held on October 24, with only four spaces open and two weeks to go.
