Athletes displayed their sporting prowess on Saturday, competing in the final selection process for the annual South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games to take place in the Ilembe District Municipality in December.

With 15 sporting codes and more than 4000 participants nationwide, the SALGA Games are considered to be the second biggest sporting event in the country, after the South African Games.

The main purpose of the games is to promote social cohesion through sport and improve the lives of the youth.

On Saturday, Paradise, Arbor Park and Newcastle High School’s sports grounds were filled with a competitive atmosphere as athletes pushed themselves to the limit to show they were the best in their sporting divisions.

Selections were made for team sports such as rugby, soccer and netball, as well as for track and field items.
