Ron Howe hoists singles trophy

Newcastle Bowling Club will host the annual Presidents Cup this weekend, with 64 bowlers making up the men’s and women’s prospective A, B, Seniors and Invitation teams for the 2016 quadrangular and provincial tournaments.

Dundee Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone Singles Championships last weekend, with an entry of 30 men and 12 women.

At the completion of sectional play, Sue Hutchinson, Alice Howe, Samantha Shaw, all from Newcastle, and Nan Roos of Dundee won their sections to qualify for the knock-out stages.

In the semi-final games, Nan beat Sue and Samantha beat Alice, to set up an intriguing final.

After a close tussle, Nan eventually ran out the winner by 21 shots to 16.

The 10 men’s section winners were Douglas Steele, Stephen Shaw, Sid Price, Ron Howe, Fritz Botha, John Douthwaite, all from Newcastle, plus Hogart Gevers of Vryheid, Gerhard Smith and Tony de Pooter from Volksrust, and Andries Fouche from Piet Retief.

In the preliminary knock-out rounds, Andries beat John, and Stephen beat Fritz, leaving the remaining eight players in the quarter finals.

Douglas then beat Hogart, Andries beat Stephen, Ron beat Sid and Gerhard edged out clubmate, Tony.

In the two semi-final games, Douglas beat Gerhard and Ron beat Andries, setting up an all-Newcastle final.

Ron continued his good form to get the better of his younger opponent, and add another title to his name.
