Many results to acknowledge, all in one go

It’s been a long time since our golf course accommodated a field of 72 golfers in a four-ball competition

There has been so much activity on the golf course over the past two weeks and with a holiday in between, the ‘scribe’ managed to skip a week’s report for the Gazette and now there are many results to acknowledge in one go.

The Durnford’s Lodge Monthly Mug was played on Saturday, June 13, with a good Medal field challenging for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ division Mugs, along with trying hard to improve their progressive eclectic scores.

The ‘A’ division Mug was won by Charles Elworthy with a creditable 69 net, followed by Enrico Bozza with 71 net. The ‘B’ division Mug was won by Leon Steenkamp with 70 net, on a count-out from playing partner Cas Rautenbach. Stuart Porrill scored the winning Individual Stableford score of 37 points, followed by Gerhard van der Westhuizen with 35 points.

‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Enrico Bozza, Charles Elworthy, Noel Hoffman and Nivesh Nirghin. Sifiso Mdluli won the ‘Longest Drive’ and six golfers carded two-clubs. Charles Elworthy also scored the ‘Best Gross’ round in the competition.

Thanks to Charles, Paddy-Ann and Durnford’s Lodge for the sponsorship of this event and to their staff for their assistance.

On Tuesday, June 16 (Youth Day), the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce & Industry arranged a golf day, with Ithala and Sumitomo Rubber the anchor sponsors of the day.

It’s been a long time since our golf course accommodated a field of 72 golfers in a four-ball competition.

Winners of the ‘Scramble’ event were Wynand Wessels, Aurette Boardman, Ryan Seele and Gerhard van der Westhuizen with 97 points. ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Jannie Kritzinger, Enrico Bozza and Sipho Hlongwa. Corne Stevens won the ‘Longest Drive’.

Thanks to the Ladysmith Chamber and to all their associate sponsors for a truly great day.

The Saturday 20th competition was the Round Table vs Rotary Challenge, played as a 4BBB Stableford event with support to both the local service clubs and a good fund-raiser for a very worthy local charity.

Winners of the Better-Ball event were Rajen Govender and Ash Ranoo with 52 points, followed by Noel Hoffman and Geoff Lee with 51 points, and then Sagi Pillay and Neal Singh with 48 points. ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Murray Hume, Sipho Hlongwa and Enrico Bozza, who seems to be making a habit of being very close on the Par 3s.

In the final analysis, however, it was the Round Table 52 team that took the spoils against their Rotary challengers with a score of 533 to 520. Thanks to both these service clubs for their support to local charities through projects such as golf days, etc.

The fourth round of Mick’s Rules was played on Sunday morning in absolutely the best possible weather conditions.

It was calm, became hot later and so did the competition.

There were some big scores and some close ones, but in the end, all had a great morning’s social bowls. The next round is scheduled for Sunday, July 12.

Friday evening suppers remain popular and last Friday’s rump steak special went down a treat. Father’s Day lunch was well supported and all enjoyed the tremendous lunch prepared by the ‘A’ team. This Saturday’s golf competition is the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, a very worthy cause and also a very popular annual event with the opportunity to advance to regional and national play-offs.
