Cathleen roars onto Oval Track

However, the racing club has changed gears and a woman’s division has now been formed to allow female racing junkies to speed down the track, competing for the top spot.

The Oval Track has for a long time been viewed as a male dominant sport.

However, the racing club has changed gears and a woman’s division has now been formed to allow female racing junkies to speed down the track, competing for the top spot.

Cathleen de Jager is one of the four women drivers who have roared onto the track in her bright pink car.

Having a year’s worth of experience in racing and ready to compete, Cathleen is no stranger to the Oval Track world. “My whole family is involved in racing. My father, Johann de Jager, my stepfather, Boet Buys as well as my brother and stepbrother all race,” she laughed.

Cathleen said she loved roaring down the track. “I love climbing into the car and experience the adrenaline.”

Cathleen intends to aim high and race to success. “I intend to participate in the upcoming Regional Championships, which will take place in Loskop in June,” she said.

Would she encourage other young women to compete in the fast-paced sport?

“Yes, I would. You learn a lot from racing and one of the reasons I had originally suggested a women’s division be opened, was because I knew there were women who were interested and enjoyed racing,” she explained.

Anyone interested in taking part in Oval Track racing, can contact Boet Buys on 083 467 6660 or Johann de Jager on 084 300 097.
