Formidable JKA force at Championship

All karateka who were placed first, second or third at the championships will be representing NKZN at national level, which will also serve as the trials for the Africa Cup later this year.

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal (NKZN) JKA championship was held on March 14 at Farmers Hall.

With more than 200 entrants from affiliated clubs of Dundee, Hluhluwe, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Paul Pietersburg, Piet Retief, Pongola, Volksrust and Vryheid, the tournament packed a heavy punch with participants competing in nail-biting kata and action-filled kumite.

For some this was a first-time experience, while others had a chance to redeem themselves or fight for a title.

Competitors participated in different divisions ranging from the Novice, to Elite categories in different age groups, from as young as five years and as old as forty.

Not only was this competition a chance for karateka to prove what they could do, but the championships also served as the trials for the National Championships to be held at the Standard Bank Arena on June 5 and 6.

Newcastle JKA thanked all karateka who competed, and the parents who helped as table officials and came to support their children. Without these people this tournament would have not been possible.
