Making waves at the Midmar Mile

On February 7, pupils, parents and staff from St Dominic’s Academy Newcastle participated in the 41st annual Midmar Mile.

On February 7, pupils, parents and staff from St Dominic’s Academy Newcastle participated in the 41st annual Midmar Mile.

The weather made for an excellent race as 22 St Dom’s swimmers took to the water.

Abigail Peters was the first St Dom’s swimmer out of the water in a time of 25:13, followed by Gustav Boshoff who swam the 1.6km race in just 27:03.

Of the adults, proud mom, Tharina Peters and ex-St Dominic’s Academy teacher, Tanya Pepler, were neck and neck, completing the race in a time of 31:24 and 31:48 respectively.

The other results are as follows:

Sheryl-Anne Grobler (27:26), Garrick Bach (27:46), Amy Fraser (28:54; 25:35- Sunday race), LJ van Staden (29:13), Katie Muratori (31:12), Jenna Bach (31:55), Ansie Joubert (32:14), Ruhan Potgieter (32:30), Teegan Malherbe (33:01), Rebecca Ihlenfeldt (38:08), Kevin Peters (38:10), Alan Bach (39:29), Lianka Grobler (40:37), Fathima Kader (41:09), Aqeelah Kader (43:32 and her 10th consecutive swim) , Shelley Le Roux (45:01), Jordan Friend (47:15) and Pietman Grobler (56:22).

The school was proud of St Dominic’s Academy’s 1940 head girl, Lorna Cochran, who completed the swim in 01:27:22, breaking her own record of oldest swimmer at 91-years-old.
