Burnt End

The annual quadrangular tournament between the four KwaZulu-Natal bowling districts was held in Durban recently as a warm up before the SA Inter Districts, which is to be held in March.

The men’s senior sides did exceptionally well, winning five of their six games to top the senior’s section. The men’s and ladies open teams also did well, to finish just behind the leaders in their respective sections. This augurs well for the March tournament.

The KZNCB B and Presidents teams gained valuable experience and practice time for the future.

Final overall points position:

Ladies – Port Natal (47),

Kingfisher (40.5),

KZNCB (22),

Natal Inland (10.5)

Men – Port Natal (42.5),

Natal inland (32),

KZNCB (30),

Kingfisher (15.5).

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted the Northern’s zone mixed pairs competition last weekend, with a record of 36 entries received.

After three rounds of play, the winners from each section proceeded to the knock-out stages. In a preliminary round match, which finished in the late evening, Joan Schoon and Colin Broderick of Newcastle beat Soon Moolman and Margaret van Heusden, from Vryheid, to advance to the quarter finals.

There, they went on to beat Dries Els and Noleen Jacoby, also from Vryheid. In the other quarter finals games, Newcastle’s Ron and Alice Howe beat Ilva and Harald Zoeppritz (Vryheid); Lorraine Vincent and John Cross (Vryheid ) beat their club mates Nolan and Betina Malan, and John Douthwaite and Sue Hutchinson beat Odette and Culis Hamman (Pongola).

In the semi-finals games, Ron and Alice beat Joan and Colin, and John and Sue accounted for Lorraine and John to set up an all Newcastle final.

The final was a whirlwind contest with Ron and Alice getting off to good start by scoring a three on the first end. Thereafter, no team scored more than two shots, and going into the last end the difference was still three shots.

Ron and Alice then scored a single to deservedly annex the title for the third time.

Both teams now qualify for the KZNCB playoffs to be held in Zululand in April. In the playoff game for third place Lorraine and John beat Joan and Colin.
