Kickboxing, more than kicking and punching

“I enjoy it because it keeps me fit, but I have found that has helped me in everyday life as well. Kickboxing has taught me how to converse with people; it has taught me respect and how to deal with situations in a calm manner,”

Kickboxing is an aggressive sport, right?

Wrong. According to Ameer Maharaj, there is more to kickboxing than meets the eye.

Aveer began his kickboxing career during his school days, through learning the basics from his uncle. “I then joined Bashido Fight Club in Durban, before moving to Newcastle and joining Tiger/Crane MMA Club,” he explained.

During his years in training, Ameer said he had learned valuable lessons.

“I enjoy it because it keeps me fit, but I have found that has helped me in everyday life as well. Kickboxing has taught me how to converse with people; it has taught me respect and how to deal with situations in a calm manner,” he said.

Through the exercise regime which kickboxing requires, Ameer said he had learned to focus and felt it would be beneficial for teenagers to get actively involved in kickboxing or other sports.

“I don’t see many youngsters taking part, but kickboxing can help them with their studies, as they learn to concentrate and I found that if you have a bad day, you can always vent in a healthy way on the mat,” he concluded.
