The Fed Auto Summer Business League is now well on its way with three games already under the belt.

Despite the looming cloudy skies, the league continued and the friendly rivalry intensified as log positions became evident.

A farewell function for Tim and Kay Taylor will be held at the club on Friday evening, starting with a 10 end game of bowls at 6pm, followed by prizes and snacks.

Members are requested to enter their names on the notice board to assist with catering arrangements.

The District will be hosting the u/19 and u/25 trials at Newcastle Bowling Club on Saturday, November 8 (all day). The Club Mens Trips continues on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday the men and women will finalise the trips competition. A reminder has been issued regarding the young versus old competition, which will be held on November 15. The club drawn pairs start on November 22 and 23 and finish on December 7.

One of the longest standing club sponsored competitions in the country, the Friedman Cup, took place at Dundee Bowling Club last weekend with 36 teams from all over the country participating.

After five games with the winner plays winner system being used, the following prize winners came to the fore :

Men’s Section: 1st place : Kevin Williams, Keith Harcome, Lourens Roos and James Evertse (Maritzburg); 2nd: Phillip Scheepers, Miskiet Ferreira, Dion Leiaty and Hogart Gevers (Vryheid and Richard Bay); Des Hean and team (Stella Park – Durban) and 4th place: John and Trevor Douthwaite and Andre Vivier and Pierre Swart (Newcastle and Harrismith).

Ladies and Mixed section: 1st Place: Louis Tolmay and team (Umhlali CC); 2nd: Ellen Cawker and team (Margate); 3rd: Vlekkie Visser and team (Richards Bay) and 4th Rita Meyer and team (Empangeni).

The Plate event also took place, and was won by Shaun Hughes and team from Estcourt, with Dundee’s Carel Arndt, Dougie Slabbert, Robin Lowe and TW Wessels finishing second.

The Northern Zone Singles Championships was played in Newcastle recently with pleasing turnouts in both the Men and Ladies sections. The six section winners in the ladies event were: Vicky van der Merwe, Phyllis Reis (both Newcastle), Noela Dreyer (Vryheid), Nan Roos (Dundee) and Kate Osborne and Delene Louw both Mahawane CC.

In the knock-out stages Noela beat Vicky and the went down to Nan in a semi-final game, whilst Delene firstly accounted for Phyllis and then Kate to move to the final. Nan and Delene had an excellent tussle before Nan edged out Delene 21 – 18 to add another sting to her already impressive bow!
