ALTHOUGH the weather was cold last weekend, all the cricket games went ahead as scheduled.
On Saturday, Gladiators were hosted by Dumbe in a 20/20 fixture. Dumbe batted first and scored a healthy 157/6 in the allotted 20 overs. A good opening stand of 88 between Leon Solms (45) and Charle Beneke (42) was the main contributor to the score. Best bowling figures for the Gladiators were J van Niekerk (4-0-31-2) and Ashgar (4-0-18-1). Top bowling from Brendon Brockman (3-0-10-4) and L Niebuhr (2-0-16-3) had the Gladiators skittled out for 62 in the thirteenth over, with only Zia (19) getting into double figures. Dumbe won by 95 runs.
Also on Saturday, at Cecil Emmett Park in another 20/20 game, Scorpions played Wicket Wasps. Wicket Wasps batted first and struggled to get a partnership going and were eventually bowled out for 81 in the fifteenth over. The top contributors with the bat were Norman Phillips (22) and Ashley van der Heever (16). The best bowling figures for the Scorpions came from Freedom Buthelezi (3-1-4-2) and T Zondo (1-0-4-2). Although, defending the low score, a fine opening spell of bowling from Connor High (4-1-8-2) and Tiaan Naude’ (4-0-14-2) had the Scorpions battling at 22/4. But a resistant 26 from Q Zwane and the middle order batsmen grinded out a victory in the 17th over. Scorpions won by three wickets.
On Sunday, Mr X traveled to eDumbe to do battle with Dumbe in a Kennedy Cup match. Dumbe batted first, on what seems to be a batting paradise this season, and scored a whopping 304/6 in their 40 overs. Leon Solms (77) and J Frenzel (46) top scored for Dumbe. Best bowling figures for Mr X were David Sandalls (8-0-55-2) and J van Wyk (4-0-31-1). Tight bowling from Dumbe, A Kuhn (2-0-11-3) and Zane Holliday (7-0-28-3), restricted Mr X to 224 all out in the 39th over. Best batsmen were J van Wyk (20) and a scintillating 106 from 88 balls from Duvan Grobbelaar (his second century this season!). Dumbe won by 80 runs.
