Wind, rain and a spike

Two teams representing Newcastle made an excellent showing of the town’s sporting talents when they participated in a volleyball tournament in Dannhauser on Saturday.

Both teams were the extreme opposite in terms of experience on the volleyball court, as Papa Joe’s only recently picked up the sport, while Newcastle (Majuba) had some previous experience.

Papa Joe’s quickly realised they were way out of their depth, but fought on valiantly, and continued to push back against the most veteran of teams.

However, their lack of experience proved to be their downfall, as they lost all their four group games, albeit one had been in their grasp, but they let it slip through.

On the other hand, Newcastle (Majuba) was a behemoth of strength, winning all of their group games.

Dannhauser managed to bring two teams to the party, namely Dannhauser and Underdogs.

Both sides exhibited excellent skills, but at times miscommunication let the teams down.

SVC of Dundee was the only team capable of standing tall against the Newcastle (Majuba) side, and faced off against it in the finals.

During the course of the day, the wind had increased considerably, and coupled with the rain crashing down, the finals had to be cut short with only one set played.

The one set rule, probably gave SVC the advantage, as SVC managed to take the game and the trophy, but the team played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and rightfully deserved to have a hand on the trophy.
