Seniors play good golf in the heat

A hellishly hot day with not a breath of wind, but the ‘old-timers’ managed to play some really good golf

The Ladysmith Country Club golf course was full of activity during the past week, with the Wednesday afternoon competition, a full field of 68 SAGES (senior golfers) on Thursday and the EC Bozza Construction Monthly Mug on Saturday.

The spring treatment of the greens is now well underway and with the arrival of the specially prepared top dressing, the programme to scarify, Hollow-Tyne and top dress the greens is scheduled to be completed soon. The 8th, 9th and 11th greens were treated a few weeks ago and already the improvement is visible. Hopefully we will be blessed with some good rains soon and then the golfers will be able to take a more positive and attacking approach to greens with good putting surfaces.

Wednesday afternoon’s competition continues to grow in popularity and the ‘ball pool’ prize is a new challenge. Next Wednesday (24th) is the ‘Skaapdag’ Individual Stableford event sponsored by FNB Insurance Brokers.

On Thursday, 68 senior golfers from SAGES Drakensberg area, Eastern Free State area and Midlands area converged on the LCC for the annual ‘Triangular’ tournament. A hellishly hot day with not a breath of wind, but the ‘old-timers’ managed to play some really good golf, resulting in the Eastern Free State team taking the overall honours. A super lunch enjoyed by all rounded off a great day’s golf, good fellowship and the opportunity to make new golfing friends.

Saturday afternoon’s golf competition was the September Monthly Mug, sponsored by EC Bozza Construction – once again with good promotion, a full field of golfers for this medal competition and some excellent scores. The late-afternoon gusty wind did have some effect on the scores, but the better golfers have enough experience to beat the wind.

Winner of the ‘A’ Division Mug was Charles Elworthy with an excellent 66 net. Charles also carded the ‘Best Gross’ score. Runner-up in the ‘A’ Division was Corné Stevens with 68 net. The ‘B’ Division winner was Pamela Sanders with a great 67 net on a count-out from Trevor Jacobs. The Individual Stableford winner was Sunil Magan, scoring 39 points, with Kim Boardman in second spot, scoring 38 points. ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Jannie Schuler, Carla Craffert, Charles Elworthy and Sipho Hlongwa. Thokozani Dladla was the ‘Longest Drive’ winner and the month’s ‘longest walk’ went to Kurt Swoboda. There were seven two-clubs. Thanks to Enrico Bozza and EC Bozza Construction for the excellent sponsorship of this Mug and for the delicious after-prize-giving snacks.

The bowling green remains closed for the spring treatment and our bowlers will be advised as soon as the green is available for play. We plan to have a green opening competition.

This Saturday is a Club-sponsored Individual Stableford competition, Saturday the 27th is the ‘Captain vs Vice-Captain’ match and Sunday the 28th is the next round of the Mortimer Toyota League. These matches have been well timed, considering that they coincide with the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, which will have all the golf lovers glued to their television sets for yet another great golfing event.

The Friday ‘100 Club’ draw was won by George van der Merwe.
