Karate students win medals

Congratulations to all the karateka on their fine performances and good behaviour during the tournament

The NKZN team came back with no less than 90 medals from the South African JKA Karate Championships, which were held in May at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg.

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal team, consisting of 108 karateka, travelled together by bus to this prestigious event to help build team spirit and confidence. All the first-time participants went through the traditional initiation stage and by the time they arrived at their destination, they felt that they were truly part of the team.

The Junior boys and girls participated on the Friday, while the Junior and Senior Brown Belts and Junior Black Belts, Open, Elite and Veteran Black Belt sections competed on the Saturday. Competition was tough and with over 3500 entries in the tournament, the NKZN team successfully managed to achieve 90 medals: 21 gold, 22 silver and 47 bronze.

Congratulations to all the karateka on their fine performances and good behaviour during the tournament. A special word of thanks goes out to Sensei Johan Swart, head of Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA, for his continued support, guidance and arrangements throughout the season and this tournament.

To all the other senseis who assisted the karateka during the tournament, thank you! Congratulations also to the NKR medal winners: Tharan Schulmann – gold for Kumite (fighting); Jeandre Minnaar – bronze for Kumite and Kata; Jonathan Tucker – bronze for Kata and Kumite; Abigail Crocker – silver for Kata. Karate classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Scouts Hall from 5pm to 5.45pm for beginners, and 5.45pm to 6.30pm for senior belts.
