Old clubs are still the best

The February Monthly Mug was sponsored by Sanco Industrials and with the golf course in excellent condition (with pleasant, although very hot weather and threatening thunderstorms), the competition produced some really great scores from the participating golfers.

With this being the second round of the 2014 Eclectic Challenge, the entry was good. All the upcoming Medal events to ensure top positions in the Eclectic competition are sure to be strongly contested. Added to this, the additional Stableford event (run in conjunction with Monthly Medals) will surely attract more golfers, especially those who prefer a less serious round on Saturday afternoons.

Played in two divisions, the ‘A’ division was won by club president Wayne Bentley with an excellent score of 67 net (four under his handicap score). When asked later how he managed to score so well, he replied that “my old clubs are still the best for me”. Wayne has been an excellent client of the Pro-Shop for some time and has tried out numerous sets of new clubs without success, so it seems that what was really important was to ‘go back to basics’; get back to the equipment he has relied on for so long and get back into the swing of things. Runner-up was Murray Hume with 68 net.

The ‘B’ division winner was Mike Attwell, who scored a great 68 net. Runner-up was Paul de Villiers with 72 net. Paul has been seen practicing hard for some time and it goes to show that some good practice does improve one’s game.

The Best Gross score of 74 was carded by Sifiso Mdluli, who also won the Individual Stableford prize with 39 points, followed by Carla Craffert with 37 points. The Longest Drive was won by Helgardt Slabbert and Steve Dixon was the ‘Sucker’ of the month.

Jannie Schuler, Russell Goosen, Gerald Boardman and Sifiso Mdluli carded two-clubs.

Thanks to Vernon and Pam Sanders for another wonderful sponsorship, the super snacks and the great fellowship enjoyed by all after the golfing event.

The Mortimer Toyota League first round for 2014 was played on Sunday morning, with 10 teams taking part in this year’s round-robin event, leading up to a final play-off in December. There were a number of big wins and big losses in this round, which has really split the field going into the remaining rounds. The Four Must Get Beers team scored the only ‘full-house’ of eight points, with four other teams (Rough Riders, Mortimer Toyota, Team Golf and Scorpions) scoring seven points each. The next round is to be played on Sunday, March 16. Thanks to Mortimer Toyota for their continued sponsorship and support of this very popular annual league event.

This Saturday’s golf competition is the Ladysmith Bulldogs Four-Ball Better-Ball Stableford event, so get your entries in before Friday at 6pm to be part of this very popular annual competition.
