Soft course leads to good scores

The weather held off and the large field of golfers all managed to get through the 18 holes without a soaking

The Malibu Palms Pub, Restaurant and B&B sponsored golf day on Saturday afternoon was a real treat for the golfers who, at one stage, thought that Thursday and Friday’s welcome rain would cause the competition to be cancelled. Instead, it softened the course and brought the greens to life for a pleasant round of good-scoring golf. The weather held off and the large field of golfers all managed to get through the 18 holes without a soaking.

Winners of the competition were Gary Beaton and Riaan du Plessis with 46 points on a count-out from Dries Slabbert and Carmen Seele. Third place went to Chris Nel and Noel Hoffman. There were no fewer than six better-ball pairs who returned 44 points, so the count-out placed Geoff Lee and Steve Dixon in fifth place and Kim and Aurette Boardman in sixth.

All four ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were golfers with low handicaps, proving that the greens were receptive to crisply-struck, accurate strokes with good height and ability to stop quickly. Jane MacKenzie was closest at the 3rd and 8th, Vernon Naidoo at the 11th, and Sipho Hlongwa at the 12th. The ‘Longest Drive’ winner was Murray Hume, with Bryan Cuninghame slotting the longest putt. Vernon Naidoo, Wayne Bentley, Jan Pretorius, Jane MacKenzie and Sipho Hlongwa carded two-clubs. Thanks to Izak and Tanya Boshoff for a great sponsorship.

Our bowlers travelled to Estcourt on Sunday to take part in Estcourt Bowling Club’s Open Trips competition and all enjoyed a great day’s bowls, possibly with the exception of the last six ends in the afternoon when the heavens opened and gave the bowlers and the green a really big soaking. Only minutes after the bowlers had left the green (all having completed the 15th end), the green was completely waterlogged and would have been unplayable. The Estcourt bowlers took first and second places, with Graham Elworthy, Liz Mackintosh and Kurt Swoboda flying the Ladysmith flag in third place. All in all, it was a great day’s bowls and good fellowship in Estcourt.

This Saturday’s golf competition is a multi-sponsored event and next weekend, the club will be humming with the MSC Agencies & Harvey World Travel sponsored day on Saturday and the 10th round of the Mortimer Toyota League on Sunday.

Friday evening’s ‘100 Club’ draw was won by Ankia du Plessis who graced us with her presence for a change and scooped the three-grand pool to everyone’s delight. So this Friday we revert to a grand-and-a-half.

Bowls for chickens on Friday at 5pm, tabs-in on Saturday afternoon and the Mortimer Toyota League on Sunday morning should keep our bowlers happy this weekend. Friday evening suppers at the club are very popular and the kitchen serves really good meals at reasonable prices, so come along and join in the fun and fellowship.

Congratulations to Warren and Stacey who will be tying the knot on Saturday.
