Bowlers keep their eyes on the kitty

Nan Roos retained her impeccable form to win the ladies' title.

The monthly tabs-in competitions continue to be popular with members. Roger Jackets, Koos Smit and Tollie Willemse won the FedAuto meat competition for October, played on the first Saturday of the month. Frans Schoon, Joe Cowan, Trevor Vincent and Tim Johnston won the club meat competition, played on the third Saturday of the month.

Vryheid Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone Singles Championships last weekend. Ladies’ section winners were Ann Wood, Esther Willemse and Alice Howe (all Newcastle), Nan Roos (Dundee) and Lorainne Vincent and Ilva Zoepritz (Vryheid). In an entertaining final, Nan beat Lorainne to add another string to her bow of titles.

The 11 men’s section winners were Anil Durgadin, Sid Price, Douglas Steele and Steven Shaw (all Newcastle), Hogart Gevers, Phillip Scheepers and Henry Klofta (Vryheid), Brendan van Vreden and William Herrington (Piet Retief), Tony de Poorter (Volksrust) and Doug Slabbert (Dundee).

In the semi-finals, Hogart beat Steven (who had earlier edged out Sid) while Brendan beat his clubmate, William. Hogart’s experience counted in the final against his younger but very gallant opponent Brendan, allowing him to win the men’s title.

The extremely popular Kings trips competition is due to be played this Saturday and another full house of teams from all over Northern KZN is expected.
