Newcastle anglers enjoy day of skill-building at coaching clinic.

This clinic marked the first time such an event was held in Newcastle, offering a much-needed alternative for local anglers who usually have to travel to Johannesburg for similar events.

The sports grounds of Newcastle High School were alive with excitement as local anglers gathered for a highly anticipated free angling coaching clinic on Saturday.

Hosted by SupaCast, the event provided a valuable opportunity for both novice and seasoned anglers to enhance their skills, explore new techniques, deepen their appreciation for the sport and receive coaching by Protea anglers.

SupaCast representative and Protea angler, Bernie Von Nieuwenhuizen, was thrilled to share her extensive knowledge of the sport with fellow enthusiasts. “Fishing is not just a hobby; it’s a passion and a lifestyle that allows people to escape the daily grind, reconnect with nature, and unwind,” she said.

“The most exhilarating sound is to hear a reel running.”

Von Nieuwenhuizen also highlighted the significance of bringing coaching clinics to smaller communities, saying: “We wanted to teach anglers new techniques and build their confidence. Who knows, there might be a future Proteas player among us and helping them refine their skills is our way of giving back.”

Event organiser, Fadella, expressed gratitude to all the sponsors who made the free coaching clinic possible. “A big thank you to Newcastle High School for providing the sports grounds, North City Wholesaler and Imphuphu Wholesalers for the complimentary drinks, Midas for the food, and SupaCast for bringing this invaluable coaching opportunity to Newcastle,” she said.

She further expressed her wish for the sport to be more visible. “Angling as a sport is popular in Newcastle but we lack exposure,” she said.

“It is such a big thing that the clinic came to Newcastle and we hope we will host many more in the future,” she concluded.
