Newcastle Bowling Club hosts South African Mixed Pairs Championships
Newcastle Bowling Club's final celebration of their centenary year saw them host the South African Mixed Pairs Championships from July 18 to July 21.
The winners of each of the 20 bowling districts in South Africa converged in Newcastle to compete against each other to determine the South African Mixed Pairs Champions. In one of the strongest fields ever, the 20 teams were divided into two sections.
Each team played nine games against the teams in their section.
Competition was keen throughout the tournament, with the winner of each section only being decided after the last game on Saturday afternoon.
The final between the section winners saw Protea (Springbok) player Jason Evans and his wife, Louise, from Johannesburg Bowling Association do battle against Albertus Britz and Laetitia Wolvaard from North West District.
A close encounter followed with the score at 15 all with two ends to play.
Jason and Louise managed to score a single shot on the final two ends to be crowned the 2024 champions.
The runners up of each section Tobie and Karen Grobler (Sables) and Neil Burkett and Olivia Carulei (Western Province) were both awarded with bronze medals.
KZNCB representatives, locals John Douthwaite and Michelle Steele, were in contention most of the weekend but three losses on the last end put paid to their chances of a podium finish.
The highlights of their weekend being their victory against the eventual winners Jason and Louise and their draw against former Springbok Neil Burkett and his partner Olivia Carulei.
Bowls South Africa representatives, Owen James and Arthur Langley, complimented the tournament committee, Monty and Michelle Steele, John and Trevor Douthwaite, Lukas Niemand, and all Newcastle members on an extremely well-run tournament, with special mention being made of the playing surface of the greens and the teamwork of all concerned.
