Boschpick Highlanders crush Bethal Rugby Club in entertaining display

DJ Siwela (7) impressed with his pace and running metres to score a try while Siya Manqele (6) was outstanding among the forwards.

Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders again proved that they are a force to be reckoned following their 36-5 victory over Bethal this past weekend.

The Highlanders showed that their only intention is to run with the ball and score tries. They scored six tries in an entertaining display.

Highlanders’ head coach, Andrè ‘Swanie’ Swanepoel, said Bethal started strongly but their inability to finish let them down, and once their defence was broken, it was game over for them.

The Highlanders defence, on the other hand, was solid, which Bethal found difficult to bridge.

The forwards provided ‘good, clean ball’ for the backs. From the lineouts and the scrums, all eight players must be credited for their efforts.

Mnelisi Gumede (9) who scored an impressive hattrick and only recently started playing number 9, impressed with his pace and support play.

Wicus Coetsee (10) controlled the game very well, while Gift Mabaso (12) had a solid game in attack and defence.

“We set a goal at the beginning of the season to win two away games and all our home games. We are one game away from reaching this goal,” said Swanepoel.

Points scored during the match: Mnelisis (9): three tries; Siwela (7): one try; Manele (6): one try; Veggie (11): one try; and Wessel (15): kicked three conversions.

Highlanders II also won their game against Bethal II with a score of 24-5, with Zungu (2), Wynand Kritzinger (8), and Janri (10) catching the eye.

Highlanders III played Utrecht Rugby Club on Friday evening, beating them 71-10.

Highlanders I and II will be taking on Witbank Rugby Club at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds on Saturday at 14:00 and 15:30.

Highlanders IV will take on Ladysmith Rugby Club at 14:00 on their B field.
