Ward 3 Youth Day celebration brings the community together

Youth engagement and good, clean family fun, were the primary objectives of Ward 3's third annual Youth Day celebration on Saturday, June 15.

Ward 3 councillor, Connie Harriram, and her ward committee hosted this year’s event a day earlier as Fathers’ Day was commemorated on June 16.

Event organisers strove to cater to all age groups and interests, with various stalls, a soccer tournament, a thunee competition, a jumping castle and a mobile clinic offering vitals checks.

Guests also had an opportunity to donate blood at a station set up by the Blood Bank, and to discuss their concerns about crime with members of SAPS, the community policing forum (CPF) and community crime fighters.

Harriram said the highlight of the event, for her, was the soccer tournament which attracted teams from all over Newcastle.

“Competition was tough in the soccer tournament. Participants fought hard but also displayed good sportsmanship, both on and off the sports field. The reason we chose soccer for our Fun Day is because it is a sport that young people enjoy both as participants and as spectators,” said Harriram.

“The Ward 3 committee extended its youth initiative to the Suryaville flats where we arranged visits from SANCA (the South African National Council in Alcoholism and Drug Dependence), Lifeline, and community crime fighters to provide counselling and support to the youth.”

The Madrid team was crowned the football champions of the day.

Harriram thanked members of the Ward 3 Sports Committee, as well as the committee’s chairperson, Rammy Singh. She also extended her gratitude to her dedicated ward committee members.
