Competitors punch and kick to excel in the JKA championship tournament

The Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal Japan Karate Association hosted a tournament that attracted the best of the best karate-ka from around the area to the Farmers Hall on Saturday (March 9).

The NKZN JKA has been putting in a lot of work in preparation for the highly anticipated championships in which the top four players, chosen from among nine associated clubs, advance to the nationals in July.

JKA Events’ tournament director, Sensei Warren Bainton, expressed hope that the team that is put together will perform as well as they have in prior national championships.

“South Africa has already produced winners. For instance, the men’s team Kumite was placed third and the men’s team Kata placed second on a couple of occasions,” he said with pride.

“The way our coaching systems are going, this is going to be a good year to get good results, probably in the top eight or top 16. There is always a chance for a medal, “he continued.
