Ten NKZN black belts at the SA JKA Standardisation Seminar

The last session was a Kumite split class, which had an emphasis on Kihon Kumite, Jyu Kumite, and competition Kumite, highlighting the importance of speed of movement and blocking and evading.

The annual SA JKA Standardization Seminar was held this year at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg over the past weekend.

This training session, which caters to all registered SA JKA black belts (Shodan and above), serves to enhance the awareness and understanding of JKA karate already acquired by the black belts and is a platform where the SA JKA senior instructors impart their skills and technical knowledge gained from years of experience, constant training and learning, and a strong determination to seek perfection, not only of the art of JKA karate but also of one’s character.

The Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal (NKZN) region had ten black belts that took full advantage of the opportunity to learn and gather information ahead of the NKZN JKA Regional Championships, which will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Farmer’s Hall in Newcastle.

The session commenced with mass training led by 8th Dan, Rob Ferrier Shihan.

With more than sixty years of experience, Rob Ferrier Shihan’s main emphasis in the class and advice to karate was that “one hour of good, hard, and correct training is better than eight hours of incorrect and mediocre training.”.

Following the break was a split class that consisted of Sentei katas: Jion, Bassa-Dai, Kanku-Dai, and Empi, which the Shodans and Nidans attended, while Sandans and above could choose to attend either the Gankaku, Gojushihosho, or Sochin class.

This session was all about correct technique and form.

The judging workshop led by Mark Wainman Sensei was held after lunch. Following a brief “show and tell” discussion of the rules and correct procedures, the class was split into groups where karateka could practice their judging abilities.

The last session was a Kumite split class, which had an emphasis on Kihon Kumite, Jyu Kumite, and competition Kumite, highlighting the importance of speed of movement and blocking and evading.

Spectators who wish to attend the NKZN JKA Regional Championships on March 9, 2024, are welcome to do so. The competition starts at 09:00 at the Farmer’s Hall.
