Local parkrunners bless Madadeni children’s home with new running shoes

The organisers encourage people of all abilities to run, jog, or walk together - this event is open to all and best of all, it is free!

Enthusiastic athletes gathered in their numbers on Saturday (February 17) to enjoy the weekly 5km parkrun at Rooi Point Farm.

However, this wasn’t just any ordinary parkrun Saturday; it was a special day focused on supporting a community project.

Parkrun official, Gwyneth Root, said the children’s home had recently registered to become parkrunners.

However, they were in need of shoes, as most of them have to run in barefoot.

With this in mind, local gynecologist Dr. Friedrich ‘Burnie’ Burnard and his wife, Merle Burnard, collected and purchased brand new running shoes, which were handed over to the children of the Madadeni Children’s Home.

Prior to the morning run, Root thanked the Burnards and everyone else involved in the initiative for making a difference in the lives of those in need.

The results were as follows:
1. Mandla Sibeko – 21:44
2. Jo Claassen – 22:27
3. Miso Sithole – 23:30
4. Russell Nugent – 23:32
5. Tiago Pereira – 24:18
6. Elmien Scott – 24:46
