Newcastle Mayor hosts successful Mayoral Cup ahead of SALGA Games

The competition additionally served as the final selection procedure for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games.

In commendable strides towards giving young people an effective means of psychosocial intervention, curbing crime and poverty, and promoting participation in civic engagement, Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, recently hosted the much anticipated Mayoral Cup tournament.

The two-day Mayoral Cup featured action in various sporting codes, including rugby, netball, cricket, volleyball, golf, and soccer.

The tournament also served as the final selection process for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games to be held in the King Cetshwayo district in December.

Speaking from the touchline, Mayor Dube, said that the ‘tournament was not only an opportunity for youngsters to showcase their talent, but it was also an opportunity to nurture holistic development as participants are challenged cognitively, socially, and physically.’

“The objective of these games is to entertain, provide opportunities for self-expression, and teach values and discipline. They have the capacity to touch the lives of all pupils participating, regardless of gender, language, or social status,” Mayor Dube remarked.

“The annual four-day SALGA Games sporting event will not only see a number of sports enthusiasts flocking into our town to share in the festivities, but it will also bring a positive injection into our local economy. This is in line with the 2035 vision and mission of the municipality; Newcastle is indeed on its way to becoming a vibrant metro”, remarked the Speaker, Thengi Zulu.

Day 2 of the Mayoral Cup was held at the Newcastle Golf Course.

The SALGA games will be hosted from December 7-11 in various areas in the King Cetshwayo District.
