Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders suffer major loss during league finals

The first team's defeat especially was a bitter pill to swallow – with only three minutes left on the clock, the Highlanders were leading 29-28.

The Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders suffered a major blow after losing all three of their matches in the knockout finals of the JNR Murray and Finley Cups.

Highlanders I and II played against South Coast Warriors at the Villagers Rugby Club in Hillcrest in the Jnr Murray Cup, while Highlanders III took on the Kapai (McClaire) Rugby Club in the Finley Cup at the same venue.

“We didn’t end this season well with all three teams losing their respective matches”, said Highlanders head coach, Andrè ‘Swannie’ Swanepoel. However, even though we lost all our games, the positive aspect of this was that we were able to fill all three teams for the away day games.”

The first team’s defeat especially was a bitter pill to swallow – with only three minutes left on the clock, the Highlanders were leading 29-28 but poor defending allowed the South Coast Warriors to score in the dying minutes, to give them a 35-29 victory.

“The Highlanders scrumming was excellent and the South Coast Warriors were demolished but, unfortunately we could not capitalise on this to win the trophy.”

Swannie did, however, give special mention to the players who played out their hearts and managed to help the team earn their points.

These were:
• Siya Maqele (no. 8) – scored two tries.
• Kheshwa Malibongwe (no. 6) – scored one try.
• Moyane Vuyani (no. 14) – scored one try.
• Pierre Booysen (no. 10) – scored two conversions and one penalty.

Furthermore, the Boschpick Highlanders were invited to play in Winterton on Saturday at the yearly SA Legends Day.

SA Legends played Brackensberg Rugby Club Legends and Highlanders against Drakensberg Club, with the Highlanders winning 26-19.

“It was a wonderful day, attracting around 3 000 people. It was a pleasure playing there, and after the game, the players mingled with the legends.”

The Highlanders’ Henk Booysen was fortunate to play for the Drakensberg Legends against the SA Legends.
