Vryheid bites the dust against Piet Retief in semi-final

"We are proud of what we have done this year so far. Vryheid Rugby Club is a completely player-run, managed, coached and funded team.''

Vryheid Rugby Club travelled to Piet Retief over the weekend for what proved to be a ‘throw-away’ semi-final.
Unfortunately, Vryheid failed to rise to the occasion and lost 22-10. In hindsight, the Maroon Machine did not produce their best performance and were simply out-played by Piet Retief. There were fantastic individual performances, but individuals don’t make up a team effort.
Adriaan Koekemoer was the ‘Man of the Match’ for the forwards. This young man played a full 80 minutes with a serious ankle injury. Danie Nel was once again ‘Man of the Match’ for the backline.
The Maroon Machine is now looking forward to the Murray Cup, where the players hope to bring more of their ‘A-game’.
“We are proud of what we have done this year so far. Vryheid Rugby Club is a completely player-run, managed, coached and funded team. The large number of very young players aged between 19 and 21 puts the club in a fantastic position for the coming seasons.
“We would also like to ask for any financial support from the Vryheid community, to help cover the travelling expenses for the upcoming Murray Cup. We were solely reliant on grants and sponsorships, but unfortunately we haven’t received anything as yet from the Natal Union,” said club chairman Richard Pace.
