Newcastle Shuriken MMA Club excel at 2023 Wako SAKA national championships

Six athletes from the Newcastle Shuriken MMA Club recently participated and excelled at the 2023 Wako SAKA national championships held at the Mongol Wrestling Club in Lepalale.

413 fighters from all nine provinces were selected to compete in the different Tatami and Ring Divisions of the Wako Kickboxing Tournament.

Only 21 fighters qualified to represent KwaZulu-Natal, and of these, six were from Newcastle.

The results were as follows:

Zonica Booyse (11) over 47kg weight division female young cadet:

  • Kick light: 1st place
  • Light continuous sparring: 1st place

Zonica Booyse was awarded SA colours and selected as part of the Nationals team to participate in the next SA Champions event.

Heino van der Westhuizen (13) under 42 kg, male young cadet:

  • Kick light: 3rd place
  • Light continuous sparring: 4th place

Jayden Middleton (12), male under 42 kg:

  • Kick light: 4th place
  • Light continuous sparing: 5th place
  • Point fighting: 4th place

Maverick van Der Merwe (15), under 63 kg, junior male:

  • Light continuous sparing: 9th place

Justin Moller (21) senior male:

  • K1 full contact ring fighting: 3rd place

Nicholas Hartman (16) Under-79kg male Junior:

  • Point fighting: 2nd place
  • Light Continuous sparing: 3rd place

Nicholas has been chosen to represent the President’s team at the next SA Champions event.
