Nico-Jan Chowles proudly completes his very first Comrades Marathon

Nico-Jan Chowles has always had one objective in mind: to be the best in whatever he does. This year was no exception, as he resolved to run the 2023 Comrades Marathon for the first time and finish it in a time of 11:47.

“I have always wanted to complete the Comrades along with a few other long-distance races and decided that the next few years would be the perfect opportunity for this. Running really helps to manage stress and clearing one’s mind. Whether its 15 minutes or five hours, that time on the road is time spent with just you and your mind. You can have a chat (to yourself), think things through, reset, and recharge.”

Nico-Jan describes himself as always being a very active person, participating in various activities, including rugby, cricket, swimming the Midmar, strongman competitions, cross-fit, and even a bodybuilding competition.

“I have always been running as part of my cardio exercise to remain fit for all the activities that I participate in. Running, as my main focus, started last year in June when a friend and I decided to compete in a half marathon,” he said.

Nico-Jan competed in his first marathon in April this year, which was the Elands Valley Marathon, which he also used as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon.

“The Elands Valley was memorable because I shared it with my wife and friends. It’s fantastic how all the runners on the road want to support and help each other.”
