Emadlangeni promotes sports as a healthy alternative to drugs and gambling

“The high rate of unemployment in Northern KwaZulu-Natal can lead youth to seek relief from stress and boredom in self-destructive ways. This is when youth turn to drugs and gambling,” says Emadlangeni mayor, Cllr Mzwakhe Buthelezi.

Sports provide a healthy outlet for unemployed youth to keep busy, keep fit and learn important life skills about team work, cooperation and leadership,” he added.

Buthelezi was speaking at the Arts and Sports Festival hosted by the Emadlangeni local municipality on Saturday, June 23.

The annual Festival commemorates ‘Youth Month’, when government partners with the private sector and non-government organisations to engage youth on the challenges they face and present opportunities for learning, self-improvement and economic independence.

The 2023 ‘Youth Month’ was celebrated under the theme: “Accelerating collaborations and opportunities to improve the lives of the youth.”

Emadlangeni’s Arts and Sports Festival drew hundreds of young people to the Bensdorp sports field where they participated in various codes of sport, including soccer, netball and indigenous sports.

They were also encouraged to express themselves in creative arts, such as maskandi, rap and hip-hop.
