Ward 3 committee host eventful family fun sports day

The community of Fernwood was in for a real treat when Ward 3 Councillor, Connie Harriram, hosted the second annual Ward 3 sports day this past Friday, June 16.

Newcastle sports fans eagerly signed up to compete in the open division tournaments.

“Our yearly Ward 3 sports and family day was a tremendous success. Due to many areas celebrating Youth Day, we 12 teams entered,” said Cllr Harriram.

“The kids enjoyed board games, carom board games, tug-of-war, and obstacle courses. The adults competed in a thunee competition and there were lots of prizes to be won.”

Attendees also enjoyed delicious food stalls while supporting their local teams, while medical personal stood on the side lines, ensuring safety came first.

She also thanked members of the sport committee and all their sponsors of the day for their support.

The Mai-Mai team from won the soccer tournament for the second year in a row. The runner up was Noisy Boyz from Fernwood and the bronze medal winners were the Legend killers.

Harriram congratulated all participants who entered the tournament, and whether they had won or lost; she was extremely proud of them.

According to her, the event was so well attended and appreciated by the community that she and the Ward 3 Sports Committee decided to make it an annual event.

“We promise to host many more such events within the community going forward,” she said.
