Munawarah FC take home 1-0 win against Park United

This past Sunday in the RBCA Chartered Accountant Super League, Zim Stars took on Fairleigh United. It was a slow start to the game, as neither team really showed hunger for goals.

The game sparked into life 10 minutes before the break as Fairleigh United were awarded a free kick just outside the Zim Stars penalty area.

Lolly Lourens saw his strike rattle the crossbar and go out harmlessly for a goal kick. In the second half, Fairleigh continued to apply pressure on the Zim Stars defence.

It was Zim Stars that caught Fairleigh on the break, and Roy Willy proved too clinical for their defence as he rounded the United keeper and tapped the ball into an open net. Zim Stars walked away 1-0 winners.

In the second game, Munawarah took on Park United. This was a much feistier encounter than the earlier one. Park United played the long ball to penetrate the Munawarah backline but Khalid Moola marshalled his defence to great effect.

Both teams pressed on, trying to find the opening goal, but brilliant defending from both teams turned the keepers into spectators.

In the second half, Ally Ebrahim of Park United had a great opportunity to put his side in front when he had a free header, but the acrobatic Aboo in the Munawarah goal was well positioned to make the save.

However, it was Munawarah who took the lead from a corner when the ball was cleared, only to find an unmarked Saleem on the edge of the box, and his volley found the back of the net.

The Park United goalkeeper remained rooted to the spot and he could only admire what was a glorious strike. Munawarah ran out 1-1 winners. In the last game, the Spartans and Newcastle Legends went head-to-head. In this encounter, there was a huge rivalry both on and off the pitch.

Legends had a glorious opportunity when Bilal beat the offside trap, rounded the goalkeeper, onlyl to strike the ball into the side netting. Gregory Maistry was solid at the back for the Legends, while Shane Van Der Plank was superb at the back for the Spartans.

Spartans’ Pro Abdool proved to be menace in the middle of the park. He played a great through ball to Miguel, who was quickly tackled by Rovaal Kunju, who managed to neutralize any threat on the Legends goal.

In the second half, the Spartans turned up the pressure, and the Legends midfield began to show signs of collapse. Patrick Vier of Legends had to be substituted as he was cramping.

With this, the Legends broke down in the centre of the park. It was all Spartans from this point on, but Legends defence with, Gregory Maistry and veteran Mervyn Maharaj, proved to be rock solid.

In the last kick of the game, Spartans striker Drogba saw his shot saved on the line by Cedric Smith, diving low at full stretch to get his finger tips on the ball to keep the Legends in the game.

The game ended in a goalless draw but was full of entertainment.
Spartans coach, Moody Wood, believed his team deserved more than a draw and was full of praise for his players. On the other hand,

Legends coach, Praniel Kunju, was happy with his team’s performance and said that he had fielded six players over the age of 40 in his team, and that four players had played in Dundee the day before.

Coach Kunju praised both sets of supporters for ‘adding flavour to such a tense game’.
