Challengers Angling Club crowned double champions

The penultimate fixture of the Angling Professional League (APL) was the hosting of the AA Coaches Grand Challenge on May 21 at Richgate Park.

The old foes, Breakwaters AC and Challengers AC, were locked in a titanic battle, with Breakwaters AC having won the AA Coaches Knockout Trophy while Challengers AC took the honours in the Mohamed Midas League.

It was an interesting duel because both clubs had one piece of silverware in their collections.

The competition lived up to its name as the grand challenge, with both clubs evenly matched and equally determined to win.

After the draw for the zone was completed under the watchful eye of Vishal Dookhi and his contingent of fellow Freshwater Spartans members, various duties were executed in an exemplary manner to the satisfaction of all participants.

The choice of zone was done by Vishal Dookhi, who drew the battlegrounds of Zones 3 and 4, “favourites” for some while and dreaded by others.

The climatic conditions were rather challenging: freezing temperatures, fierce wind, and equally bad catches. Amid the doom and gloom, some anglers were fortunate to haul a few good-sized fish.

Ruchir Buduram of Challengers AC emerged as the “Angler of the Day,” chalking 8 points, winning the blue cap, R200, and an outright trophy for his outstanding performance when most seasoned and ardent anglers had blanked.

When the results were announced by Vishal Dookhi, the Challengers AC camp was euphoric, who after some inspiring performances, secured their second title this season.

The score line was 34 points, with Challengers AC shrugging off the determined Breakwaters AC outfit with 25 points.

The record books show that Challengers AC last won the Grand Challenge title in the 2011–2012 season; a great comeback indeed.

“Thank you to the officials (Freshwater Spartans), participants of both clubs, and our major sponsors, Mohamad Midas and AA Coaches, sponsors of the league, Knock Out and Grand Challenger, respectively.”

The final fixture of the APL will be the APL closed competition on June 4 at Richgate Park.
