Spartan FC sinks Fairleigh United in intense soccer clash

The Newcastle Social Football League kicked off on Sunday with some exciting games. The league has been renamed the RBCA Super League in collaboration with new sponsor RBCA Chartered Accountants.

In the first encounter, Newcastle Legends took on Park United. Both teams played great football.

Park United took an early lead 15 minutes into the game when Kalon Ahmed broke down the right flank and pushed the ball for Saleem Hajee to score. This seemed to trigger Legends’ search for an equaliser.

Park United absorbed the pressure in a bid to catch Legends on the counter.

However, Legends found the equalizer when a pin-point through ball from Dr. Gregory Maistry found Caleb Maistry, who threaded the ball past the advancing Park United goalie.

Five minutes later, Caleb Maistry fired a thunderbolt of a strike into the net, with the Park United goalkeeper caught by surprise. The Legends walked away 2-1 winners.

In the second game, Munnawwarah took on Zim Stars. Munnawwarah seemed to be dictating the pace of the game and deservedly took the lead just before halftime.

In the second half, Zim Stars levelled through Roy Willy, who waltzed his way through three defenders to score.

Munnawwarah piled on the pressure while Zim Stars also put a few attacks of their own together. Sloppy defending from Stars saw them concede a penalty late in the game.

Munnawwarah scored and won 2-1.

In the match of the day, Spartans took on a new look Fairleigh United. The Spartans dominated the game from the onset and scored three goals within 10 minutes.

Fairleigh United were out of ideas and concentrated on trying to keep a rampant Spartans at bay. Spartans led by three goals at the break.

In the second half, Fairleigh United scored two quick goals to shock Spartans. This prompted Spartans manager, Gary Hendricks, to take action and he made three changes to try and rescue the game.

Realising that time was running out, Fairleigh United started to surge forward in an effort to tie the score.

The Spartans took advantage of this and scored the fourth goal by catching Fairleigh United on the break.

This was the final nail in the coffin for Fairleigh United. Both teams gave an excellent display of awesome football skills to keep the crowd on their feet.

Fairleigh United manager, Mervin Wood, was full of praise for his youngsters, boasting that seven of his players were first-time league players.

He congratulated the Spartans on their triumph but warned that Fairleigh United would be better prepared for the next encounter.
