Challengers AC crowned Mohamed Midas League Champions

The fifth round of the Mohamed Midas League at Richgate Park on May 7 drew great interest as the title holders in the various categories were to be decided, with some categories wide open, including the top three anglers of the year under the banner of the APL.

The two clubs in contention for the title of Mohamad Midas League Champion for Season 2022-2023 were Challengers AC and Dannhauser AC, with the winner between these two clubs laying claim to the prestigious title.

After the draw of zones was completed, anglers rushed to their respective zones to entice the rather elusive fish.

Challengers AC emerged as victors, scoring 19 points to claim the title.

Stillwaters AC pulled off a major feat, finishing second with 14 points just one point ahead of their sister club, Breakwaters, scoring 13 points.

A small contingent of anglers from Freshwater Spartans scored 8 points, followed by Dannhauser AC on seven points, which is very uncharacteristic of the club as they were high up on the league table. Glencoe scored three points.

The final log position for the Mohamed Midas League is as follows: Challengers AC (50 points), Dannhauser AC (40 points), Breakwaters AC (40 points), Stillwaters AC (26 points), Freshwater Spartans (16 points) and Glencoe AC (14 points).

Freshwater Spartans, who joined the fold of the APL in League 3, put in a credible performances with a small contingent and are destined to be very competitive in the new season.

Kaveer Singh (Challengers AC) scooped the title of “APL Angler of the Year” with 70 points, followed by Inayat Ahmed (NDH – 44 points) and Aniel Boodhoo (SAC – 39 points).

Top anglers per club were as follows: Ashvir J. Singh (BAC – 22 points), Nikesh Dookhi (NGL – 21 points), and Sonja Du Plooy (Freshwater Spartans – 32 points).

The title contenders for the season are as follows: Nadir Chrisenduth (BAC, heaviest carp of 4,280kg), Nikesh Dookhi (NGL, heaviest non-scaled category of 3,370 kg), Sonja Du Plooy (Freshwater Spartans AC, Lady Angler of the Year – 32 points),  Abhay Singh (Stillwaters AC, Junior Angler of the Year – 12 points) and Elias Dabooda (Challengers AC), crowned the Senior Angler of the Year with 14 points.

Mohamed Mia of Challengers AC was crowned the Mohamed Midas Angler of the Day, notching five valuable points and receiving the blue cap, R200 in cash and an upright trophy.

The top three anglers of the season will win tackle vouchers worth R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000, respectively, with the compliments of Mohamed Midas and the APL.

The Angler of the Year of the APL will win the ultimate prize: a family weekend at a destination of their choice to the value of R4 000.

The top angler of each club who do not finish in overall top three spots will receive tackle voucher to the R250 for their achievements within their club.

This season, the Lady angler of Year will receive a R1 000 tackle voucher.

The next fixture of the APL is the AA Coaches Grand Challenge on May 21 at Richgate.
