Ward 2 golf day fosters community unity

The event, the first of its kind, served as a fundraiser to empower committee members with the resources they need to implement service delivery projects in the ward.

The golf day hosted by Newcastle Ward 2 committee on Saturday, April 22, was imbued with a sense of unity, optimism and community cooperation.

The event, the first of its kind, served as a fundraiser to empower committee members with the resources they need to implement service delivery projects in the ward.

Ward councillor, Bebsie Cronjé, said she couldn’t be happier with the way the day went and described the ‘general positivity’ of the golfers, as the highlight of the event.

Funds raised will be used to undertake service delivery projects in Ward 2 that the cash-strapped municipality has neglected to provide, including grass-cutting, tidying up of verges, fixing potholes, painting street-lines and refurbishing the play-parks.

“We know addressing the challenges we have with major infrastructure is beyond our capability as a ward committee, but there are little things we can take responsibility for that will contribute towards a better living environment for everybody in Ward 2. In organising this golf day, we came to appreciate how many residents are willing to jump in and assist to get the ward back into a state we can once again be proud of,” said Cronjé.

“I know people are upset about having to take responsibility for service delivery themselves. After all, we are one of the highest paying towns in KZN as far as rates are concerned. But, at this stage, you must come realise that, if you adopt that kind of attitude, nothing will improve. We are not going to get the services we wish we could have. It seems unfair that communities have to do this stuff on their own, but the municipality is definitely not going to do it,” she remarked.

Conjé went on to proudly attribute the success of the golf day to her ‘dedicated ward committee’. “For a ward committee to host a golf day, is a first in Newcastle. It has never been done before. Luckily, I have a wonderful ward committee and even though members come from different political parties, they are absolutely committed to driving service delivery in the town, especially in Ward 2.”

“I want to thank each and every person who was involved in this fundraiser, whether through sponsorship, through prizes, or through the ward committee. Thank you for standing by each other and working on this initiative,” Cronjé concluded.

George Meyer emerged as the overall winner of the day with 41 points. The longest drive on the third hole was won by Ebert Koorts and Eric Kemp won nearest the pin on hole 5. Ben Chowles took home a specially crafted walking stick, with a built in bicycle bell and torch should he ‘get lost in the woods’, for winning the ‘Longest Day’ title. Owen van Aarde won the whiskey draw. Congratulations to all the winner.
