John Douthwaite and Michelle Steele retain Northern Zone mixed pairs bowls title

The other three had to up their game to match Ron's high standard, which they did, resulting in a close match that could have gone either way.

The Northern zone’s mixed pair’s competition was held last weekend at Newcastle Bowling Club, with a pleasing entry of 26 teams, including a number of new members competing in a zone tournament for the first time.

After three rounds of play, the section winners were: John Douthwaite and Michelle Steele, Lukas Niemand and Edith Pretorius, Marius Bothma and Megan Redlinghuys, Sid Price and Sue Hutchinson, Ron and Alice Howe (all Newcastle), Ben and Adri Coetzer (Volksrust), and Sylvia Malan and Louis de Jager (Dundee).

Luks and Edith defeated a valiant Marius and Megan in the quarter-finals while Sid and Sue claimed a win over Sylvia and Louis and Alice and Ron overcame the Volksrust couple.

In the semi-finals, John and Michelle defeated Lukas and Edith, while Alice and Ron defeated Sid and Sue.

The final was then a re-enactment of the previous two years’ finals and promised to be a ding-dong affair.

A large crowd watched some excellent bowling, with Ron setting the tone with an excellent display of leading.

The other three had to up their game to match Ron’s high standard, which they did, resulting in a close match that could have gone either way.

With peels called at 4, 8, and 12, it was still anyone’s title.

John and Michelle then hit a three, followed by a single from Alice and Ron, to take a two-shot lead into the final head.

With the shot down, Alice was on target with her drive, but the jack did not go where it was supposed to, resulting in a score of 2 for John and Michelle to retain their title.

A special mention must also be made of all the new bowlers who competed, particularly Marius and young Megan, who won their section with great promise.

Sid and Sue won the playoff for third and fourth place, defeating Lukas and Edith in an exciting game.
