Parkrunners let out their inner child

On account of the rainy conditions and the fear of more flooding, only a handful of parkrunners participated in Saturday’s event.

“We’re doing exactly what mother told us not to,” said parkrunner, Gwyneth Root, at the weekly event hosted on Saturday, February 18. “We are playing in the rain and sloshing around in the puddles.”

“It great!” she laughs. “It brings out the inner child in all of us.”

“Parkrun is something we look forward to every week. We meet the most interesting people and we all get to know each other so becomes a social event,” Root adds.

On account of the rainy conditions and the fear of more flooding, only a handful of parkrunners participated in Saturday’s event.

Those who turned up had no qualms about splashing through the pools of water that had collected from the heavy rain of the previous day, or slopping through the overflow from the dam.

Parkrunner, Riaan van Wyk, joked that he needed to brush up on his swimming skills to participate.

Out-of-town parkrunners, who braved the inclement weather, were welcomed at the Grey Goose parkrun, including Lewis Boshoff from Dundee, and Warwick and Giselle Guy from Ladysmith, accompanied by their pet German Shepherds, Ollie and Pascha.

Other fur babies, who joined the run, including Cody the chocolate lab, Kody the golden retriever, Honey, Zoomie and Dolly, all seemed to have just as much fun as their humans, if not more. Fortunately, the rain stuck to a gentle drizzle for the duration of the event.

Congratulations to Lace du Preez who beat her personal best, completing Saturday’s parkrun in under 30 minutes.

The next parkrun takes place on Saturday, February 25. The run starts at 8am at Grey Goose in front of the Iyakhala venue. To register for parkrun, visit parkrun.co.za and fill in the online form. Participation is free.
