Newcastle expats in historic journey across Australia

After 44 years, the three friends finally reconnected after discovering they all lived in Australia and planned their epic journey across Australia.

Three expat Newcastle friends recently embarked on a soul-searching journey across Australia on their motorcycles.

Graham Booysen, Hugh Trivett, and Derek Holmes became close friends while attending Newcastle High School in 1976 and 1977 before transferring to a new school, ultimately, losing touch with his friends.

In 2008, he and his family decided to immigrate to Australia where he began working for a retailer in Brisbane. He later bought the company for which he was working and now owns a chain of retail stores.

After 44 years, the three friends finally reconnected after discovering they all lived in Australia.

Booysen stated that the trio had planned a shorter trip through Queensland but had to cancel due to torrential rains and river flooding.

“Hugh had already sent his bike over from Perth for the trip before it was cancelled, so he decided that he would just ride his motorcycle back to Perth. This is when Derek and I decided to accompany him on the trip.”

The three friends began their nearly 5000km journey across Australia on a KTM 1290 and two KTM 890s, taking in all of the country’s beauty.

“We covered nearly 4700 kilometers in eight days, which is a fairly long distance in such a short period of time. We left Brisbane early on the Saturday morning and drove south into New South Wales by midday, then west across country NSW to Grafton, where we spent the first night.”
