Ice swimming enthusiast represents SA at international championship

Local ice swimming sensation Reino van Weiligh travelled to Samoens, France to compete in the 5th IISA World Championships.

The 29 year-old Ferrum High School alumnus began swimming at the young age of nine and has competed in many other events, including the SA Nationals, the 2 LEN Cup, and the Midmar Mile.

He recently competed in the 5th IISA World Championships where he finished first in his age group and broke the age group world records in the 100m, 500m, and 1000m free events.

Ice swimming requires an incredible amount of dedication and mental strength. Reino spends four hours daily in the pool and works a full time job as a SAP BASIS Engineer.

“It is quite a mentally tough race especially when you do a 1000m in ice. At about 500m, you do not feel anything anymore, your body gradually shuts down and your hands and feet get very heavy. The only thing you focus on is to keep breathing as you race in the cold icy water.”

When he’s not in the pool, Reino enjoys walks with his dog Xara, 3D printing and watching series.

I have always had a motto to never give up, never back down and I try to live by it. If I set my head on a dream, I will do anything to achieve it.”
