Newcastle Legends crowned NSSL Champions

The match ended 1-0 to Legends – enough to crown them champions.

The Newcastle Social Soccer League came to a dramatic end this past weekend, with Newcastle Legends walking away NSSL Champions.

Going into the final day, Newcastle Legends and Malawi were tied for first place on 15 points each but Malawi had a three-goal advantage.

Both protagonists faced off in the first game which was a must-win affair for Legends, while a draw would have sufficed to crown Malawi Champions.

Legends scored the game-winning goal in the second half against Malawi, who were cheered on by almost everyone packed into the Fernwood grounds.

Malawi pushed for the winner, but goalie, Cedric Smith, kept them at bay with an excellent save. Legends captain of the day, Dr Gregory Maistry, was all over the pitch in defence and led by example in attack.

The match ended 1-0 to Legends – enough to crown them champions.

The winner of the second game, between Zim Stars and Uloom FC, would determine the runners-up. Zim Stars, a team that found form late in the season, won 2-1.

Finally, on Derby Day, Fairleigh took on Spartans in a one-sided game with the former running out 5-0 winners.

The final standings of the Newcastle Social Soccer League:  Champions: Newcastle Legends, followed by Zim Stars, Malawi in third, Spartans in fourth followed by Uloom and Fairleigh United.

Newcastle Social Soccer League would like to thank all of the teams, fans, and sponsors who helped make the league a success in 2022.
