Johannesburg expats dominate Newcastle Legends in Benoni

In the local league, Spartans continued their rise in the Newcastle Social Soccer League with a 1-0 win over Uloom FC.

The Newcastle Legends over 45 team travelled to Benoni on Saturday (November 5) to play against the Johannesburg Expats, Benoni Old Boys and Chatsworth Masters.

In their first game, Legends took on Expats and soon had their opponents on the ropes but Akesh Dawlall and Jimmy Singh could not convert the numerous chances that came their way.

With Patrick Viera and Mushin Ngcobo in charge of the midfield, Newcastle Legends kept pushing for a goal, with Ronnie Naicker and Dennis Gounden, running like teenagers down the flanks.

But it was a set piece that settled the game with Expats scoring from a corner kick, effectively ending Newcastle Legends’ momentum.
Expats won 1-0.

Newcastle Legends took on Benoni Old Boys in the second game, and again, Legends dominated.

Premie Singh and Vincent Muthu excelled in the middle of the park but Martin Thabani and Akesh Dawlall both squandered golden opportunities.

The Newcastle defense was led admirably by Pranil Kunju, Moulana Basha, Andrew Badhripersadh, and Jesse Dipa.

But again, Legends were undone with Benoni Old Boys scoring the only goal of the game, leaving the Newcastle team again disappointed.

Newcastle Legends put on a show in the final game, winning 2-0, against a selected team from Chatsworth, Benoni, and Expats, with Premie Singh, Vincent Muthoo, Dennis Gounden and Ronnie Naicker allcalling the shots.

According to Legends coach Pranil Kunju, ‘it was day to be proud for the Newcastle team’

In the local league, Spartans continued their rise in the Newcastle Social Soccer League with a 1-0 win over Uloom FC, while Newcastle Legends continued their downward spiral, being thrashed by Zim Stars by 3-0 while Malawi played to a goalless draw against Fairleigh United.
