Learners excel at drum majorette competition in Durban

“This is a huge achievement for us. We only started taking part in competitions this year and to compete against schools that have been doing this for years is a big deal for us.”

The Vryheid Comprehensive School learners who took part in the drum majorettes competition that was held in Pinetown qualified to compete against other schools in Durban at Dokkis sports field.

Mrs Lindiwe Maseko, who is their coach, said that, “This is a huge achievement for us. We only started taking part in competitions this year and to compete against schools that have been doing this for years is a big deal for us.” The learners competed against six high schools in Durban and obtained second position. This led to the learners qualifying for the nationals that were held in Polokwane. “Due to insufficient funds, we were hindered from going and taking part at the national competition. We do not feel bad though, since it was our first time competing. We are grateful that we did so well at the KZN competition.”

Lindiwe also mentioned that next year they will prepare better and get sponsors, since the parents are the ones who pay for the learners. She went on to say that they will enter all the categories, which are: small drill, flex group, small flag group, mace group and large drill, to name but a few.‘’We are looking forward to hosting a ‘drummie’ competition here in Vryheid so that other schools can be exposed to this kind of sport. One needs to be disciplined, determined and have passion for it,’’ Lindiwe concluded.
